AVR Meaning and Symbolism in the poem

Owl and pussycat tattoo symbolism

Stars - spirit, truth, hope, light against seemingly endless darkness

Moon - eternity, mystery, energy, time, dreams, magic

Feather - single = loss and death / birth (Could use as end scene with a single feather and also a paw print)

Music - Passion, freedom, alive, infinite

Bird - Freedom

Tree - Long lived, lasting, strength, protection

Owl - Wisdom, education, intelligence, freedom

Cat - Watchful, independent, intelligent, selective, change, mystery

Sea/water - Purity, reflection, motion, depth

Boat - Rather large because of detail and normally sea people. Sailors - Protection against seat 1930s/40s , journey, bravery, direction, journey through life

Whilst looking for different peoples interpretations of a “bong tree” I came across “Michaelrose.co.uk” That analysed the owl and pussy cat poem and really highlighted the fact that is a nonsense poem.

Words like bong and runcible, creating words that have logic and can be worked out in context and yet are nonsensical.

The poem is based on empirical explanation only working to a point.

Poem signifies problem at heart of literature (and fiction) - Readers don’t really know why creatures are or who they are.

Nonsense poem - Literary nonsense, looks predictable and logical but defies language conventions and logical reasoning.

Abundance of nonsense techniques woven into the piece not just a singularity.

No system of logic, things facilitate meaning are max 50/50 to things that don’t.

Nonsense poetry is the destruction of all views and opinion. Lacking any coherent meaning, made up words as description, made up words for aesthetics. It holds grammatical sense but not semantic.  It is not riddles that play on words and have double meanings. And the nonsense literature “rules” will constantly be changing as no language is static.

‘ Grammatical rules” <- arranged by
The problem of making a nonsense animation is that the rules for written words are much clearer and designed . Compared to animation and moving image, so whilst words are easy to remaining grammatically correct they are also easier to manipulate whilst maintaining that coherence.

Even the definition is about literature “spoken or written words that have no meaning or make no sense”

As such I want to play on the viewer's expectations to reflect the poem. Including several layers of meaning or more so, the lack of.  Which also meant that I re did a vast portion of my original storyboard.

  • A poem about an owl and cat getting married
  • Love + commitment, how surface attraction is irrelevant and whilst aesthetics do play a part, ultimately they are only skin deep(Tattoo). But more so I want to show the choice and the commitment of what they choose through the symbolism of the tattoos and about how they represent and become a part of the person.  It is not that I wish to imply who you love is a choice, but  I wish to show the perseverance to overcome societal stereotypes, pressures and the level of commitment needed to do so.
  • The illogicality that would be presented would be a mild satirical point of view on the logic and reasoning of animation and the film industries rigid structuring and the consumers expectations that have been enforced into us over years of repetitive tropes being played over and over and over.
  • I also wish to make it in such an arbitrary way that people will be able to come up with lots of different interpretations of their own.

Newest written storyboard:

Starts as video black and white. High contrast two people two males wearing masks/
different religions/races, topless with tattoos on hands, that move onto their backs having boat emerge from back.

Each different shot has two different people, different ages, genders, religions all wearing the same masks. The two people merging into the left and right of a singular body with the tattoos overlapping.

Tattoo boat comes out of their backs as origami the origami boat in turn then breaks through the screen sending colour into the world. The now background image of the people is screwed up and then thrown away (wrapped up in a five pound note)

Owl looked up - viewed from cats point of view. Star - Famous people / star wars/ Starbucks /sun/ some real stars / daytime / starfish. And behind all of them you can see the camera lights.

Extreme close up of creatures eyes blinking owl changing from image to image in time with strumming of guitar: 1 - Sang 2 - Small 3 - Guitar

Owl playing creates sheet music / page gets flicked and you see a pianist playing (the music sounds like it’s a guitar) different chords making different lines on the walls. The lines grow thicker and the animation turns into melting lines, similar to crayons being melted.

Bright light shines, and shows the shadow of the melted scene is a map (show line to explain time)

Then flip map upside down and voila a bong tree

Invert the image to show a wood and pig in the shadows.

Human mouth speaking asking for ring / layer human anatomy bleeding away into a pig face saying “I will”

Classical animation of animated tattoo design from original concept - runcible spoon.

Hand in Hand on edge of sand - lots of people holding hands with owl and cat dancing on their back.

Zoom out ending shot that shows the animator and the camera showing the filming and the camera filming that camera showing the filming ending with a giant mirror filming it all. Revealing that all the images presented were cardboard cut outs and not people.

Fade to blue.
