I did a lot of different things over this year, including a lot of self directed study. A key point I did not like about the group project was the working hard and not smart. I feel we should have been taught a lot more than what was provided and that I was simply working on only partial knowledge.

Ultimately I did enjoy working in a group, creating other ideas, getting feedback as you went along, sharing the workload and at least towards the end, pulling on each others strengths. Communication was a key point of contest however, with things often becoming misinterpreted. Something I am glad to say improved.

I feel like I could have worked a lot more efficiently this year and am a little saddened by the time that I feel could have been used for effectively.

On another note I think I will have more belief in my ideas in the future but also push to include the whole groups opinion. Also I plan to get more feedback in the future, something I think I didn't utilise as much as I could have. And whilst I started to maintain weekly uploads prior to Christmas after I slipped and as such will take note for the future to maintain the updates as it just makes life easier later on.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/18hpR0_7sgbXF4rlBRB442Z4UGjJeVFAB1rYvUXtMxQM/edit?usp=sharing - Break down of everyone's work

As much of the original footage was useless we ended up reshooting a lot of it paying close attention to the settings and checking the footage after each shot. It was also a nicer day so that was nice.

My roles were
Editing the video footage into the final shot
Cleaning up all of the animation shots

2-4sec This was originally not created against the background so after making a rough placement I took the images and edited in Photoshop, so that it would appear behind the table. And also created a gap and ruffled fur effect so it looked like the hand and cat were directly interacting.

2-4 sec Shaded the cat
15- 22 sec Shaded the cat

29-32sec Tracked the logo to the book
29-32sec Removed the books printing making it black instead.

And if you watch closely you can also see myself and the rest of the team acting :)

33sec - Job role break down

Each person had a folder and we worked in a tiered week system.

Cat drawing the images in Flash
Lily adding the base colour
Sara shading
Me putting everything together and clean up.

I also created a weekly breakdown that fitted as the timeline cover for our group page.

We also used the animatic as a basic template and each performed our roles. Cat drawing, Lily colouring, Sara shading, myself cleaning up. This early on identified potential quality loss problems and also made sure everyone was on the same page as to the out come.

Below you can see my clean up version of Sara's image and also some filter effects.  I also made the sketchpad black and white to try and create a more sketch like look.

Sara's original image

33 sec - References

We then spent a week collecting references this was divided amongst us to the relevant areas of what we were creating. In the hopes of a better overall animation and understanding of what we were creating.

And briefly sorted through all the videos. They were mostly filmed together though the nightime sea scene was filmed by myself and Isaac Page.

https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0ByGN4Ar6TtpVcGRVTTdXdl94UVE&usp=sharing

Cat also created a new storyboard, which I timed on premier. Lily and I then went through several sounds/ Musical pieces to have along side.

33 sec - Technique research and animatic

Cat worked on flash
Lily worked on Photoshop and brushes
Sara also worked on Photoshop
I worked on Premiere/After effects

Using both images taken by Sara and Lily and a mixture from google I created the first animatic.
Including Cats flash drawings, and Lily's and Sara's pencil sketch's.

Now having a basic timing we went out filming. It was incredibly cold...

33sec - Compilation of ideas

We condensed all of our ideas down and fitting them into a storyboard using the basic timing from my research.

(Drawn by Cat)

We also created the octopus mascot who was sadly not used in our final piece by combining all of our ideas.

Cat also did a turnaround for the cat mascot.

33 sec - Initial ideas

A week behind schedule we all went away and came up with ideas, as it was the idea was pretty open as the content and could lead to each member giving a fair contribution.  We all came at it from a slightly different angel.

I looked at perception, and potential transitions. Also watching several commercials and taking note of the timings between shots that I then edited into a basic time plan.

My ideas:
I've been looking at Rob Gonsalves work and as such my ideas are very much based on his pieces. http://imgur.com/gallery/u2rKz I'd recommend checking through these what it makes sense.
Footage Ideas
1) Canno lake - Have leaves on the tree's turn into a series of butterflies.
2) Guildhall lions- Same as above but with the lions and when they flutter away to create the perspective illusion they reveal a small cat beneath. ...
3) Dockyard/Harbour - Boats are kites.
4) Spinnaker - Show it on a map with a person flying over it - Show a child building it. (Perspective play)
5) Aquarium/Underwater - Have fish carrying torches that fade into stars in the distance (Or could have pubs and swap the setting for people in the city.

Transition ideas
1) Painting in the sun beams to reveal the next scene and create the workspace that will be drawn on
2) A fishing hook drifts down the screen and catches on the bottom, pulling up into the next scene
3) Hanging up a curtain that absorbs all liquid and is the next scene
4) Cutting away the outline on show and the curtain falls away into the next scene
5) Rolling out a map onto the scene that then takes you to the Spinnaker.

I've also looked into timings and the amount of scenes I propose 6 two being the Spinnaker and the other 4 to be decided on Monday. I've also split the shots up time wise to allow for a transition between shots which I have listed above.

(1)
0-3 Night - Film Spinnaker
3-6
(2)
6-9 Sunrise - Pan up
(3)
9-11 Morning
11-13
(4)
13-15 Midday
15-17
17-19
(5)
19-20 Evening
20-21
21-23
(6)
23-25 Sunset
25-30 Logo and main details - Film Spinnaker

Cat ideas

1) time lapse split in diff sections. of walks (because shows the city in a more one to one personal atmosphere) & stills. (walk with camera & tripod).
2)animation interacting with still timelapse (if moon moves or car passes characters dodge. )
3) characters being the one who "paints the town purple" running around n splashing stuff throughout. timelapse becomes more like a fast journey.
4)photographs of things we cant really timelapse on but we want to include can be at the peak of the arc of speeding up.
5)characters should either be 2 people. boy and girl (blue and red) who become on to make purple?? or just both purple. or just 1 character. either way is fine.

Lily ideas

Sara ideas

I've been job down some type or stylish of the animation, and I'll upload some design sketches,

1. Tragedy - Pianist love towards Portsmouth
2. Comedy - Conan(Sherlock Holmes creator) introduces Portsmouth in a funny way
3. Adventure - Some cutie animals or creatures finding a treasure in Portsmouth
4. Adventure - Using some famous horror history(s) to sight-seeing points in Portsmouth
...
Footage Ideas
1. Beach in Southsea - A pianist playing piano in the sea
2. Cherry Blossom around the Southsea Castle - Flower petals turn into series of fairy
3. Spinnaker - There was a princess living in the top of tower, waiting for someone to save her(Like Rapunzel)
4. Guildhall (Building) - It was a boss of adventure story, the door and stairs turn into either its mouth and tongue. Lions were the guardians of him.

My original presentation:

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1WsbAH_QQ4okaB9M8EUoJ4akmAU4KNOnyjGknsEhB2KE/edit?usp=sharing

This was chosen by tutors as one of the group ideas to be worked on.

As such I needed to find a team so posted in the Facebook group for all of our class:

Come one, come all, for I have a story to tell.... Let me take you into the world of tourism, in Portsmouth, in a day, in 30 seconds....
But for this...Oh so wonderful event I will need:
3 humans, working in any medium, willing to become Portsmouth tourists, who are free to work Mondays 11-4 (with an hour break) minimum each week.
Helpful but not essential skills include; liking tea and cake, can draw koalas, competitive, ability to bring imagination and innovative ideas to... the table, and ability to be a decent, neighbourly human.
First meeting would be Monday 12th, after production contexts would like to have group by then. Sooo... Who wants to work with me o.o?
A link to the presentation I gave just to refresh you of the idea if you're interested. https://docs.google.com/…/1WsbAH_QQ4okaB9M8EUoJ4akmAU…/edit…
Aside from that good luck to everyone with their essays and the other groups that got chosen~
TL:DR Rosie asking who wants to work in her group, contact by Monday 12th if interested.

Only Cat responded, Lily and Sara joined the team a week later after everyone else's groups becoming full.

This didn't leave me with over much confidence in my idea, especially when I was already thinking that other presentations were a lot stronger both creatively and technically.

Lost my name new scenery and sound

Most of the information below was shown in the presentation I made on the 12/03/15. Click below to view it in the presentation format.  https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1DlV8Kq8WjJfxargZYJh0A-tKevMe0EzjL3YaYUzjukY/edit?usp=sharing

One of the things I did before giving all of my group individual may files was do completely re do the background as it was pointed out that the previous layout didn't make sense. I had also found the "sun and sky" tool that maya has in another project I was working on and applied it here.

I later added leaves which everyone individually added to their files. One of the main flaws with this was that I wasn't storing the textures in the folder that maya expected, which meant everyone had to download and relocate them all to be able to render which was a miner however unexpected set back. Though it did lead to some creepy/amusing results.  I also re did the water as whilst I liked the low poly style it made the water look more like sludge and so I change it adding an ocean shader to both the ring and the pool to create the texture instead.

New sounds and recorded voices, timings aren't accurate yet as I don't have everyone videos but I've included my final render in the section that I did. Please also ignore the extra minute of blank I forgot to adjust the settings when I was exporting.

Pre christmas development

The initial animatic we made for the pre Christmas presentation. I gathered all of the notes and feedback and annotated the video with them, so we would not only have a direct image against the comments but also a place where it wouldn't be lost and everyone would have access to them.

I then edited the timing back to 1:20 with Lily and Sara in the same room as me and giving feedback as I went along.

I then made a physical copy of the annotations and gave each person 20 seconds with both the timing of the old animatic and the new one to help guide them.  I also moved away from Trello and onto Facebook as it was an easier and quicker way to communicate with everyone.

I then gave everyone a maya file containing a clear layout and with the timings sectioned for each individual person.

Everyone then went away and worked on their sections.

Lily, Sara, Callum, Rosie. Scenes in that order.
And once again I annotated the scenes with the feedback we received.

Sound and Vis music video and breakdown .

Final video with every ones work we all roughly worked on 30seconds
Mike Baxter, Roseanna Warr, Jess Knights

Sections Mike did for this project written by Mike:
  • Edited the first 30 seconds together in After Effects
  • Produced 30 seconds of animatic (0-30)
  • Contributed to meetings and ideas
  • Constructed and textured all 3D models in Maya
  • Drew all original storyboard images
  • Acted for all rotoscoped material
    .
  • 01-06 Changed the title that Jess did by animating the letters move up and down in After Effects.
  • 07-08 Edited the photograph by using liquify in Photoshop to suggest that some one is sleeping in the bed
  • 07-08 Placed and scaled the clock into the scene, modelled by me
  • 10-11 Changed the drawn notes in the clouds to actual notes by using masks in After Effects.
  • 10-11 Placed and animated the bed in the scene by scaling and moving to suggest going into the distance, modeled by me
  • 12-13 Inserted the background by scaling the original image to suit the composition.
  • 19-22 Animated the kettle and placed and scaled into scene also adding a starburst effect whilst playing around with opacity levels
  • 24-26 modeled and composed the images for the bathroom.
  • 57 animated the water splash in Flash
  • 1.00-1.01 Animated and modeled and textured the door
  • 1.18 Modeled the hat in Maya
  • 1.22 Modeled the Couch in Maya
  • 1.25 Animated the colour explosion in Flash

Sections Roseanna did for this project Written by Roseanna:

  • 100% of the Rotoscoping: 0-34 Rotoscoped the body including the details, the remaining time I rotoscoped purely the outside so that it would be quicker and easier to work with and also have a cleaner mask as I have found when working in the green screen room previously, that when you film the bottom/floor it is incredibly hard to clean up and also that when working on the cintiqs (which we primarily did) the screen makes it look cleaner than it actually is on other screens.
    .
  • Filmed Mike acting with Jess
  • Filmed 15-18 Going down stairs background video
  • Filmed all green screen shots with Jess
  • Initial written storyboard based on our discussed ideas including a basic timing
  • Created 30 seconds of the animatic (30-1.00)
  • Talked to and worked directly with the musician who after created the original sound track, changed it to an already existing video and edited that track to fit the animation we made.
  • General project management and coordination of everyone's work
    .
  • Edited all the green screen shots into a timed video save first 34 seconds that were done by Mike
  • Edited everything together ( Mike gave me his 30 seconds, Jess gave me 7 individual videos from her section that she'd edited that I placed on top of the previous video compilation. I then changed the timing to fit the music and also added the glitch with the hat at the end.)
  • Edited the music ever so slightly, with the gasp and glitch sound and double ending.
    .
  • 0:32 Animated "skin" being removed
  • 0:35 Animated swirl enclosure of body
  • 0:39 Animated small circles dissipating from his body
  • 0:45 Animated the texture on the walls
  • 0:49 Animated the hand breakaway texture
  • 0:58 Animated bag and jacket falling down
  • 1:08 Animated Piano keys
  • 1:20 Animated the zig zag explosion from head
    .
  • 0:29 I track matted the eye and used a mask to move the music circles. Which I created in Photoshop from the "circle of life" sheet music, using an expression to make them rotate indefinitely, Adding a pulse, glow and slight bevel(to replicate the eye bulge)
  • 0:32 Double exposure effect of the shirt and the bed, basic 4 way colour change in background, and a variant of the rotating circle of life she music disks. The background image I found on Google and was a free to use for non commercial.
  • 0:34 Using a particle effect, light and the camera to create the background image
  • 0:38 Taking the sheet music and using a liquify and bevel tool, as well as a dripping style mask to make it appear to melt. I also used mask expansions to make a few of the notes appear to drip before the whole seen melted.
  • 0:40 Basic colour changes that tried to be in time with the music, using the kitchen Mike had created I move the layers and keyed out the circles to show the sheet music beneath it. With varied metallic textures on the spoon.
  • 0:44 Transitioning onto the bathroom seen Mike had created, using his animated walls I created the mosaic texture using both Photoshop and also the after effects mosaic effect on top.  I also added a slight glow to the video footage of Mike sitting. And then shrunk the overall footage to dissipate with the music.
  • 0:50 The two videos of Mike raising his hand are the same one, save one I tried to remove the fingers and the other I masked into the mirror and keyed out the dissipation to show the particle effect. Using the background image provided by Mike.
  • 0:53 Using the background image provided by Mike I used another particle effect with a White blurred adjustment layer, beneath which it had the original particle effect I had made, I then reversed the video so it looked like the original particle effect was moving up into his skin.
  • 0:55 Using the background image provided by Mike, I used the spinning three circles of music this time on Multiply to remove the white and used the particle effect inside of his body.
  • 0:57 Using the background image and also the water animation provided by Mike, I keyed out the water replacing it with a video of running water, changing the transparency. Again the original particle effect making it fade as the water hit.
  • 0:58 Using an image found on google, I moved the video up and down a little to simulate walking and keyed out my animation of the coat and bag to have different textures beneath it.

Sections Jess did for this project written by Jess:

  • Contributed to meetings and ideas
  • Produced 30 seconds of animatic  1:00-1:30
  •  Filmed green scenes sections with Mike and Rosie
  • Comprised the second animatic together on After Effects
  • Using the edited green screen shots from Rosie experimented on them
  •  I contributed some animation in Mike section of the steam.
  • Animated notes melting used in Rosie's section originally
  • Animated and comprised my section from 1:00-1:30 with more refined animation.

  • 1:02-1:07- Animated bubbles using flash, keyed out green screen rotascope and further animated the waves weaving the layers of footage and animation together.
  • 1:07-1-10 Used Rosie's rotascope and piano animation and compromised them together and synced movement with added background.
  • 1:10-1:12 Keyed out door knob background, spilt it into sections and used After Effects to animate them, added rotascope footage and placed both animations together with added background.
  • 1:12-1:14 Comprised rotascope footage with pan up background.
  • 1:14-1:16 Formatted several rendered animations into one scene with added rotascope and background.
  • 1:16-1:17 Formatting rotascope pan and background together.
  • 1:17-1:20 Made flash hat swing animations and multiplication .
  • 1:20-1:21 Comprised the mixture of rotascope and images using the color different key to interweave images.

AVR Zoetrope making of and related content.

My little owls made from newspaper, googly eyes, polystyrene balls and glue.

The balloon painted with the water and base in place and also stars added to somewhat hide the sticks holding it up.

Crayons in rainbow order

Basic paint wash

Glued in place

The set up I had ready for the hair drying

The mess it made... Luckily all the wax came off easily but soemthing to keep in mind.

Melted!

The boats for the zoetrope

Using the same wax melting technique to paint them "pea green"

Using glue and paint to try and make it stay, it easily peels if you try as you can see above but over all works well.

knowing the paint would splatter from the original melting I intentionally let it splatter into a tree like area... At least that was my intention.

Using some toilet rolls to from different shapes

Including this tree, that went on to influence the bong tree video.

Waiting for the glue to set the paper

The idea was to use the varied levels of paper to cast a shadow, this unfortunately didn't have the effect I intended.

Some photos of the assembled zoetrope at night using fairy lights as stars.
