Week 5: Texturing the hippo and Trello updates

Using Callum's model that he had unwrapped for me I started making the texture in Photoshop, however had a fair bit of trouble with where the seams met and the textures didn't.

To try and match the textures I decided not to have any around the edges, this was my test for that and I decided if it was feathered out a little then it looked okay on the model.

Here is the texture I created on PhotoShop

But then....
Cat showed me mudbox! And helped with colour and texture and made it look a lot better.
Now we have, normal, in the water, out of the water, and dirty as you can see below.

The hippo is textured and ready to go!

- Special thanks to Catriona Power for helping so much in this section -

I have also textured the rocks and the waterfall

Timings wise we were around a week behind on preproduction as we didn't do to much in Week 4. We went to London and drew a hippo which was good and a nice change of pace but overall I didn't organize everyone well enough that week. So week 5 was all about catching up on that.

Assets part 1

Maya files of Assets take 1 can be found here.

https://drive.google.com/a/myport.ac.uk/folderview?id=0BwYyuYvyzuxAb2xvQV94T0JhQUU&usp=sharing

Using Lilys images and a few from google I have created some low poly assets to be used in the shots.

With the waterfall I have had the idea of using a ring that can be rotated to give the illusion of flowing water.

Week 4: After effects, Musician brief, Second animatic

After effects

Color change and masking

 Musician brief

The man who mistook his wife for a hat

We are telling the story of a man with mental illness who cannot function or recognise items around him without the aid of music taking inspiration from the book “The man who mistook his wife for a hat” Featuring an everyday routine that many would take for granted and showing how he comes to accept music as his way of life and copes in a fast paced, noisy world.

Your target audience will be both male and female working adults with busy schedules. Aged 20-50. Who will be viewing the video during lunch breaks/traveling to work by bus or train/afternoon.

We would like you to create a music track for a 1min 30sec animation. With a dramatic intro that captures the viewers’ attention in the first 5 seconds. Then throughout replicates the man’s state of mind as he goes through an emotional rollercoaster. Showing both chaos and stability.   With realistic sounds and effects for stable parts with an underlying instrumental that takes over during the chaotic sections. With extremes in pitch.

This is our animatic that we would like you to work to, when scenes are updated we will send you up to date versions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvfl_hCyUrk&feature=youtu.be

Week 3 : Starting to use model and visual research

Little Boy Walk

Quick play blast showing a basic walk.
Just getting used to the rig now, so I am prepared for the actual animating later on.
I've also asked all of my group to do the same.

Visual Research - (With Lilly)

With Lilly we went over the psychology of colour with children and a little on lighting, which Lilly went further into after our meeting.

We discussed how our target market range is aged 2-6 years old and as far as we can tell Western culture based also. The little boy has an orange and white top and blue trousers.

We compared the different still images from the storybook pages and found that every time we found a rule one of the images would break it. For example, the backgrounds are repetitively plain but not in the zebra shot. Very sharp highlights just on the edges but not in the bear shot.
  • Bright eye catching colors: To be used to emphasis certain aspects, especially primary colors and green.
  • Cool colors: night time, soothing
  • Warm colors: stimulating, comforting
  • Green: Nature, calming, improving for reading
  • Brown/Tan platform for brighter shades
  • Boy/Hippo: Vibrant with white also being very vivid
  • Waterfall: Angelic lighting, bright whites, cleanliness
We have decided once the first colour schemes are made to try and get feedback from children at local schools, to aid towards final decisions.

Visual Research

Color change
Different platforms/screens may show a different colour pallet to the one we create. Whilst this will be something that we look into after the final colors are decided and edit accordingly. Ultimately just something to keep in mind later on in development stage.

Culture
Color change for culture English written - Internet. After reading through many different websites and there colour changes I think our main colors of Pink ,Natural colors, White will not have much impact across cultures aside from mild undertones of religion.

Color blindness
Color blindness seems to affect a large part of the population with different places giving different statistics it seems to be a minimum of 1/30 affected in some way. As such we will be avoiding: Green & Red; Green & Brown; Blue & Purple; Green & Blue; Light Green & Yellow; Blue & Grey; Green & Grey; Green & Black colour schemes.  And also using other symbolism not just colour to get mood/meaning across as this will apply both to across culture and color blind people.
Also using different textures for different colors to further break certain areas apart

Week 3: Tiger walk take 1

Tiger reference stills

Contact points and feet lifting.

Video take 1

Quick play blasts

Feedback

-You need to check the silhouette of the back legs against the ref. you may need to rotate the back legs back more to get better poses here.
-Also look where the front paw land in relation to the position of the nose in the ref (are they further than the nose?)
-You want to try and get a straight line between shoulder and paw on the contact frame . Do this by rotating the shoulder control forward a little until you get a pose the same as the ref.
