Week 12: AVR General technique research

- String

- Sweet + Origami

Origami animals and sweet water and boat, using the foil from the sweets  to add a texture to the water.

Because of the varying sizes I played with distance to vary the sizes

- Ink
So I didn't have any ink per say but I did have food coloring.... It didn't work particularly well and painting isn't one of my strong points however the flicked spray effect is one that I did like and would use again.

- Food

(This is meant to be a cat...)

The trailing effect is one I rather liked for the owl.

- Pencil

- Collage

- Chalk

- White board

- Crayon

Low polygon waves

- Finger Paint

- Toilet roll

Cat and owl which blogger won't let me put the correct way round...

Boat

Moon

Cat and owl and moon which you can't see.

- Staple + Paper

- Hand shadows

Week 12: AVR Reference

My own reference footage

A video of my cat from back home, for almost an hour with xfactor playing in the background.

Me dancing...With hand movements.

Other influential footage

Paperman

  • Clever mix of 2D and 3D
  • Black and white save red focal point
  • At the start the main character is still, the background and setting is moving as it's introduced
  • The surroundings cause reactions in the characters
  • Chase scene (Classic romance....)
  • Bad guy gets in the way, more camera shots for those dramatic movements
  • Breaks past what's holding him back
  • It all stats where it begins

  • Reference footage for how owls move
  • The two interacting
  • And also the size difference

The Pin Official Trailer

  • WW2 and focus;s on hands for  telling the story
  • A lot of hand reference and also the lighting in the film/colours

Avril Lavigne - When You're Gone

This video gave me ideas of actions and props to do with hands.

  • Body close, holding hands, the thumbs rubbing shows the affection
  • Putting a War hat on
  • Her reaching for him as he goes away
  • Hand trailing across the seats of other soldiers as he goes off
  • Hand rubbing over stomach, casual pregnancy
  • Playing with one another hair
  • Holding someone chin
  • Holding necklace/gripping nervously
  • Holding a gun
  • Griping wound
  • Doing up the tie
  • Hand over chest - show medals etc in the background
Katy Perry - Thinking Of You

  • Taking a picture from inside a book/bible? Showing the war uniform
  • Sticking above picture in he edge of a mirror
  • Running hands through hair
  • Hand on Glass/reaching
  • Holding gun
  • Hand over wound
  • Putting make up on
  • Pulling out letter
  • Kissing hands (Characters could kiss)

A rather interesting vine creator called “Zach king” has some very clever videos that without the knowledge of video editing could be perceived as nonsense. Needless to say however that his works are incredibly clever in the way they play with perception. I’ve gone through several of his videos and picked out key things I found interesting and included my thoughts of how I could develop his ideas further and apply it to the nursery rhyme project.
- Character smashes glass of screen and dislikes video (photo filters)

Boat comes out of human back, boat smashes through glass of screen
- Stand in for ground and interact with background bringing it to background (moving it)
Owl holding glitter gets thrown up and shows stars in sky night time.
- Playing on words (photo bomb)
Fowl/foul?
- Paper into real life (cat)
Cat: “you elegant fowl,” wave shoots up and when it sinks back down show real cat video ready to pounce.
- Transformation when going through filter (photo filters)
- Flipping gravity by filming upside down
- Upside down video / reverse video
Bong tree upside down so it looks like it’s floating.
- Eat background
- Go through one screen into rest
“5pound note” Replay over and over as if stuck on replay (owl off screen secretly putting lots of money into his pocket)

Week 12: Character Final Designs

Week 12: AVR Audio and Animatic

Audio links

They are not the finished version but the timings, tune and guitar are correct.

The first take that came out relatively okay

The second take with music and the final tune (starts at 27sec)

Week 12: AVR Hand Techniques

Techniques

I would like to animate on hands and whilst I think working on flash/Photoshop over the top of a video will be the easiest and quickest it will loose some of the character that pen on skin has, such as the bleeding lines etc. So I tried to make "temporary tattoos"  with ink and paper.

"Temporary tattoos"

(1)
The basic cat shape I used
So this was ballpoint pen drawn very thickly
It left a faint mark but ultimately failed (though would be good for background images)

(2)
Next I tried white board pen, marker, and again ballpoint.
It left a mark, but bled rather a lot.

 (3)
White board pen drawn straight onto the skin works rather well for a still shot but it;s relatively hard to get off.

 (4)
However when using plastic instead of paper the white board pen comes off incredibly easily

It also leaves this very nice texture.

Ultimately when making the final video I would probably do a mixture of both flash and actual temporary tattoo
